Getting started

A first step, at your pace.

You don't need to be ready to begin — you just need to start. Here's how to take your first class at Masters Studios, and answers to the questions we hear most.

How to begin

Your first visit, step by step

01

Choose a school

Pick the Masters Studios nearest you across Greater Charleston. Each school has its own teachers and character.

02

Tell us your goals

Share what brings you in — fitness, focus for a child, self-defense, or simply curiosity. We'll help you choose an art.

03

Come meet an instructor

Visit the school, meet a teacher, and find your place. Arrival and class details are confirmed by the school.

We invite you to get in touch first — share your goals, discuss placement and class choice, then meet the instructor. Comfortable clothing and exact arrival and class details are confirmed by the school, not invented policies. Come ready to learn.

Common questions

Before you arrive

What ages do you teach?+

Age placement varies by school. Please contact your preferred school about the right starting point for your child.

Do I need prior experience?+

No. Beginners are welcome in every art. We teach fundamentals first and you progress at your own pace.

What is the difference between the arts?+

Kempo is practical self-defense with dynamic basics and forms. Kung Fu develops flowing movement, flexibility and traditional weapons. Tai Chi is moving meditation for balance, awareness and relaxation. Many students study more than one.

Can adults start as beginners?+

Yes. Adults of different fitness and experience levels train with us. Both private and group instruction are available.

Private or group lessons?+

Group classes build community; private lessons sharpen detail. Talk with your school about the right balance for your goals.

Where can I see the schedule?+

The current Mount Pleasant schedule is on our Schedule page. For North Charleston and James Island, ask the school directly about class times.

What about uniforms and prices?+

Please ask your school directly. We don't publish pricing online; we'd rather discuss your goals and the right starting point first.
